Match Reports 4th September

2s remain invincible, 3s just miss out on promotion as the season draws to a close.

1st XI vs Brentwood (Away) – League.

Brentwood 179 all out from 40 overs.
Chelmsford 174 all out from 43.

Brentwood win by 5 runs.

Brentwood Defeat Champions Chelmsford in Last Game Thriller

In the final fixture of the 2021 season, Brentwood welcomed the league champions Chelmsford, in a game which the hosts required a victory to claim second place.

Brentwood captain Aaron West won the toss and elected to bat first, therefore placing Jack Sterland’s Chelmsford into the field.

The wicket of West brought Guy Balmford to the crease and the two took advantage of some loose bowling from the Chelmsford opening seam attack as the pair rapidly increased the score to 24/1 after three overs.

Jack Hebron joined Balmford in the middle and the two stuck in with Chelmsford still not bowling as sharply as they had done all season.

Horswill’s stay at the crease wasn’t long as he attempted to go over the top on a Devenish delivery but mistimed it as he was caught by Dan Hagen at deep extra cover.

Ben Sach was now Balmford’s new partner, but the Brentwood number six soon departed as he nicked one behind to Green after the keeper took a good high catch in James Clifford’s first over.

With Balmford looking like the only Brentwood batsman to stay for a durable amount of time, he was joined by another batsman in the name of Calum Balsom and just like previous partnerships this one lasted just past 3 overs.

So, Balmford was joined by yet another partner, this time in the name of Charlie Griffiths and the two delivered a punishing spell to the Chelmsford side.

Charlie Griffiths departed six balls after Balmford after his leg stump was dislodged by Waring.

Chelmsford took three wickets in three overs when J.

Brentwood’s last wicket stand between Ash Casey and Anthony Giles lasted an extremely helpful (for the hosts) 6 overs and 21 runs and was ended when Robert Catchpole took a leaping backwards catch at mid-on from a wayward Giles shot.

Chelmsford’s reply of 180 to win started not as they’d hoped as captain Sterland, also the league’s leading run-scorer by a staggering 321 runs, was out after attempting to loft a Charlie Griffiths delivery over mid-off only to be caught by Ash Casey.

Brentwood were quick in taking the second wicket too when Harry Phillips wiped out Ben Clifford’s middle and leg stump in the 8th over and Chelmsford’s score read 21/2.

James Clifford joined Dan Hagen at the crease but like Ben, the Chelmsford number 4’s stay at the crease wouldn’t last long.

Catchpole was Hagen’s fourth partner of the innings with Chelmsford needing a stable partnership to occupy the crease.

This brought Devenish to the crease and a very good partnership between himself, and Hagen blossomed.
Hebron was back in on the action in the next over as he bowled Devenish for 24 off 43 after the Chelmsford all-rounder played one onto his own stumps.

Jack Cook and Brad Green were the two batsmen at the crease now, however a partnership wouldn’t form as J.
West and Brentwood were in a rhythm which didn’t end with J.

Green was joined by Waring and the pair cautiously crept towards the total with a glimmering hope that they could snatch a close victory.

Chelmsford’s hopes of ending the title winning season with a win was dependant on Green and Styan but was quickly squashed, three balls after Waring’s wicket, as Styan was bowled by West, leaving Green stranded at the other end unbeaten with 7 off 14.

Brentwood’s 5 run victory over champions Chelmsford wasn’t enough to see them into second place as Wanstead beat Colchester, so third place is where Brentwood finished.

2nd XI vs Wanstead (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 165/2 from 23.
Wanstead 161 all out from 33.

Chelmsford won by 8 wickets.

Chelmsford won by 8 wkts and are the 2021 Essex League 2nd XI Division CHAMPIONS!
MATCH REPORT follows below…

A few facts and figures to illustrate the 2's absolute dominance in the Premier 2nd XI Division this season.

Of the 16 league games actually played (2 were abandoned before start), 15 were WON, and 1 was DRAWN.

The team went through the season unbeaten -

#'Invincibles!

Chelmsford's 15 Wins were 4 more than second placed Wanstead (11).

Chelmsford's points margin of victory was 55 clear of second placed Wanstead (322 to 267)
CHE and OPP head to head :-
CHE Runs scored 2526 for 67 wickets lost in 510.
OPP Runs scored 2378 for 148 wickets taken in 641 overs faced = 3.
So, CHE scored their runs 33% quicker than the OPP and scored almost more than 135% more runs per wicket than the OPP.
CHE took 148 wickets from 160 maximum possible = 92.
OPP took 67 wickets from 160 maximum possible = 41.
The CHE bowlers took 8/9/10 opposition wickets in all but one of the games.
The CHE batters scored at more than 4 an over in all but one the games
Match Report: The 2's were probably expecting a prompt searching challenge to their newly crowned status as Premier League Champions from runners-up Wanstead at Chelmer on Saturday.
Plan A as usual, even though Wanstead won the toss.
At 67-6 off 17 overs Wanstead were in deep trouble, with only opener Balage (38) getting into double figures.
8 bowlers were employed by Cran (just because, as in most weeks , he had the luxury of being able to do so).
161 was never going to be enough to test Chelmsford's batting and so it proved.
Thereafter, Chids (34*) and Rishi (18*) marmalised the Wanstead bowling for 36 in 3 overs to nail a trademark comprehensive win by 8 wickets with nearly 15 overs in hand.
Early beers on the outfield (again), before celebratory team 'communal' showers, ahead of the 'proper' Club celebration which went on in the Clubhouse till late.

3rd XI vs Upminster (Away) – League.

Upminster 202/8 from 40 overs.
Chelmsford 203/7 from 39.

Chelmsford won by 3 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Pranay Gogia – 71* off 68.
- Matthew Cole – 31 off 41.
- Matthew Cook – 29 off 34.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Matthew Cook – 8 overs, 2 maidens, 27 runs and 5 wickets.
- Steve Bond – 8 overs, 1 maiden, 45 runs and 1 wicket.
- Tanay Mukherjee – 6 overs, 36 runs and 1 wicket.

4th XI vs Wickford 3rd XI (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 176/5 from 40 overs.
Wickford 177/4 from 37.

Wickford won by 6 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Paul Keaney – 114*.
- Nigel Guy – 45.
- Mohammed Ahmed – 4.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Anisur Rahman – 8 overs, 2 maidens, 17 runs and 4 wickets.

5th XI vs Belhus 4th XI (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 253/7 from 40 overs.
Belhus 221/8 all out from 40 overs.

Chelmsford won by 32 runs.

A personal best performance from Andy Rodgers set the fifth team up for a win that guaranteed a respectable mid-table finish.

Long bowled tidily in his opening spell and made the breakthrough but Rodgers after a slow start began to find the boundary.

With a milestone approaching Rodgers displayed some nervousness and unfortunately picked out extra cover to be caught for 96.

Whilst a good score the outfield was extremely quick so 253 was not insurmountable.

Belhus found some momentum through Walker (51) and Edwards, but that threat ended when Hagger took a good catch off Arnold.

The season has seen some good performances but a lot of familiar failings have been evident.

6th XI vs Rayleigh CC 5th XI (Away) – Friendly.

Rayleigh 197/5 from 40 overs.
Chelmsford 227/7 dec from 40 overs.

Chelmsford won by 25 runs.

Chelmsford Batting:
- J Hodivala – 101* (retired).
- Abraham Kurian – 23.
- Rupert Redman – 19.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Abraham Kurian – 8 overs, 2 maidens, 28 runs and 2 wickets.
- Elliot Wenzel – 5 overs, 1 maiden, 22 runs and 1 wicket.
- Rohan Hodivala – 4 overs, 20 runs and 1 wicket.
- Priyantha Siriwardana – 4 overs, 26 runs and 1 wicket.

Under 9s vs Upminster U9s (Neutral) – Final.

Chelmsford 94 all out.
Upminster 93 all out.

Chelmsford won by 1 run.

The under nines won an exciting Central Essex Board Final on Sunday morning.

When the innings subsided to 38 for seven in the face of excellent bowling particularly from Narbheram (3-6) things looked bleak for Chelmsford.

Kooruvelil's 31 retired enabled Chelmsford to post 94 a reasonable total on a pitch that was hardly bouncing.

Aggressive running and good batting gave Upminster a great start but Riley Brockman
and Mary Devall removed them.

A panicked over in the field flipped it back to Upminster; needing only 2 to win with two wickets left.

An excellent end to the season showed the progress that the team has made since being well beaten in their opening game by a good and well run Upminster side.

Apologies for the delay in the reports being posted.

Oakley will be putting together an end of season newsletter, as well as the captains reports if anyone has anything they wish to contribute to this, please e-mail oakley.

Match Reports 10th July

Two wins, a loss & some rain

1st XI vs Colchester (Away) – League.

Colchester 105 all out from 40.
Chelmsford 109/4 from 22.

Chelmsford win by 6 wickets.

Chelmsford Cruise Past Colchester to Catapult to the Top of the League Table!

Both sides met at Castle Park, the home of Colchester Cricket Club, in the morning of a bleak and damp Saturday, 10th July.

Chelmsford named a squad with two changes.

After the covers were taken off at midday Colchester's opening batsmen, Joe MacGregor and Feroze Ahmed, headed out to the crease whilst Chelmsford's Aaron Beard took the new rock and limbered up to open the bowling for the away side.

Dan Wolf joined Ahmed and made 7 runs off 20 balls before he was bewildered by Keaney's bowling as a leading edge landed into the hands of James Clifford, after another great diving catch from a Chelmsford fielder.

Charlie Fernandes headed to the crease but again no partnership could be formed for Colchester as S.
Colchester were at a seriously alarming 21/4 after 10 overs with Chelmsford picking up 3 wickets in each of the 8th, 9th and 10th over, having only conceded one run in each.

C.

Oliver Allison was the next batsman in and joined a settled Hobbs, who was on 22 from 38 balls.

Darren Eckford joined Hobbs but the all-rounder failed to add any sufficient runs to the scoreboard as he was adjudged LBW from the bowling of James Liddiard in the 33rd over, leaving the pitch with 1 run off 8 balls.
Hills helped to guide his team-mate, Hobbs, to the half-century mark- reaching 50 in 89 balls and by quite some margin was easily the best Colchester batsman.

Charlie Watts survived two overs before he was on his way back to the pavilion after he chipped one to Robert Catchpole at mid-on from the bowling of James Clifford, who claimed his first wicket of the day.

Hobbs, with pretty much all of it to do on his own (like most of the innings), was joined by number 11 Vikas Agarwal.
Keaney, Styan and Liddiard shared the wickets for Chelmsford in a very good bowling display, reinforced by J.

With the absence of Dan Hagen, due to COVID protocol, Ben Clifford joined his captain Jack Sterland and opened for Chelmsford with Darren Eckford opening the bowling for Colchester.
After settling into the game well, the excitement seemed to have rushed to B.

All-rounder Devenish was next in at three, which was a rare sight, but the calm and composed temperament of his natural ability suited what Chelmsford's innings needed on a tough wicket: someone who could support Sterland- allowing him to score freely and soak up deliveries whilst keeping the pressure on Colchester to defend their substandard score of 105.

Devenish greeted J.

Catchpole joined J.

Catchpole, an experienced batsman who is also resident captain for the Chelmsford 2nd XI team and J.

The pair needed 24 runs to win and got them in just over 6 overs in which they put on a 28-run partnership that included a few fours and the rest ones and twos, with smart running between the wickets, to secure the win for Chelmsford at Castle Park.

So, with Chelmsford beating Colchester by 6 wickets, they take 20 points from the match with Colchester taking 1.

Next week sees a crucial game between first and second place as Chelmsford host Hornchurch in what could be a vital crunch game for the race for the title!

2nd XI vs Buckhurst Hill (Home) – League.

Buckhurst Hill 109 all out from 27.
Chelmsford 111/4 dec from 22.

Chelmsford won by 6 wickets.

12.

Eventually, the drizzle desists, and it brightens up (a little) but by then the other 2 games at Chelmer - 3's and 6's have been abandoned.

Captain today is Rob Hayto, who gets agreement from the Buckhurst Hill skipper, that we will attempt to start at 2.
Having lost 2 hours 20 minutes of playing time equates to 40 overs lost from the game, which means a 28/27 over split will be played.

Chelmsford wins the toss and put the visitors in on a pitch, which is damp down both edges, but dryish in the middle.

Again, the youthful and venerable seam attack combination of Rishi and Fergs (the quick and the not) have first use of the new ball.

Success for Rishi in his second over and one opener is gone, caught by Tom Halsey at deep mid-on.

After 8 overs, the visitors score is advanced to 38-1, most of them scored by Number 3, Solomonides.

Rishi (4-0-23-1) and Fergs (4-0-13-0) are replaced by the leg-spin duo of Everard and Halsey.

This has the effect of initially slowing the scoring rate, and then producing 3 quick wickets.
Stuey bowls Solomonides (30) in his third over, and then does the same to the other opener in his next over.

Next over, Tom removes the new batsman, also bowled.

Buckhurst Hill mount a fightback, adding 38 in the next 7 overs.

Tom's next over is a bit of a curate's egg containing a: wide, a no ball, a boundary, 2 wickets, and both stumpings by Nick Bailey.

Tom, (a fox in the chicken coop), with his first ball of his next over, bowls the last man, thereby terminating the Buckhurst Hill innings with a hat-trick.

Rob Hayto (36) and Nick Bailey (34) waste no time in posting 57 off the first 9 overs.

20 points for the win.

And it is to Hornchurch, that Chelmsford travel to for next week’s game.

3rd XI vs Billericay (Home) – League.

Match Abandoned.

4th XI vs South Woodford 3rd XI (Away) – League.
South Woodford 69/2 from 11 overs.
Chelmsford 68 all out from 27.

South Woodford win by 8 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Barry Clayden – 22.
- Usama Ahmed – 18.
- Shona Keaney– 5.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Usama Ahmed – 5 overs, 25 runs and 1 wicket.
- Shona Keaney – 5 overs, 31 runs and 1 wicket.
- Charlie Hagger – 1 over, 9 runs.

5th XI vs Billericay 4th XI (Away) – League.

Match Abandoned.

Coaching Structure Announcement

Head Coach Appointed

Following the AGM on 30th November, we are pleased to announce that we are moving ahead and implementing a new official coaching structure that was proposed by Rob Hayto & Nick Bailey at the AGM following a review of our coaching structure within the club.

Whilst we are implementing this, it is stressed that this is in no way to remove anyone who has coached previously or still is, their work is invaluable and will continue to be.

The new positions that have been created are:

- Men’s Head Coach
- Men’s Assistant Head Coach

- Ladies/Willow’s Head Coach

The responsibilities that fall within these roles are:

- Design coaching programmes for adults and colts
- Relay coaching programmes to the coaches to implement to colts/adults
- Ensure all training sessions are appropriately staffed with coaches
- Be a focal point for any queries & enquiries from colt’s parents, new & existing
- Assist with admin / record collecting

We are delighted to announce that James Clifford has been appointed as Men’s Head Coach, James is a home-grown talent & Vice Captain for the 1st XI.

He will be joined by Ben Waring as Assistant Head Coach, Ben joined the club in 2017 and is a senior player for the 1st X1, he is employed by Hertfordshire County Cricket Club as Performance Lead.

Leading the Ladies & Willows section will be Andrew Shepherd as Head Coach.

We are pleased to announce that age group coaches for the 2022 season are as follows:

All Stars (Age 5-8): Nick Bailey
U11’s: Abdul Baig & Jordan Campion
U13’s: Ed Cole
U15’s: Liam Keaney

Willows:

All Stars (Age 5-8): Nick Bailey

U11’s: Andrew Shepherd
U13’s: Richard Goodey
U15s: Ian Farmer
Women’s Team: Matt Spinks

Liam, Jordan, Ed & Abdul have all been enrolled in coaching courses in the new year.

We firmly believe that whilst we already have an excellent structure in place with fantastic coaches, this new structure will move some of the accountability onto younger senior players to help drive the coaching forward and continue the excellent work already done.

If anyone is interested in helping with Coaching, please contact James Clifford, Nick Bailey or Rob Hayto.

Match Reports 28th August

1s & 2s Crowned Champions!

Whilst the below reports quite rightly highlight last weekends double success, we all want to wish Rory & the 3rd XI the best of luck for their final promotion push Saturday.

1st XI vs Wanstead & Snaresbook (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 192/9 from 45 overs.
Wanstead 190 all out from 44.

Chelmsford win by 2 runs.

Chelmsford Cricket Club were confirmed as champions of the Essex 1st XI Premier Division on Saturday after claiming victory over second placed Wanstead & Snaresbrook CC by two runs.

Chelmsford’s fantastic season wasn’t just illustrated through the performances of the first team though.

The 3rd XI of Chelmsford Cricket Club are within contention of the Essex 3rd XI Division One title.

After a brief midday drizzle, play begun at Chelmer Park with the hosts placed into bat by the visitors, as Wanstead captain Joe Ellis-Grewal won the toss and elected to field first.

Wanstead had Chelmsford at 8/1 after the first three overs and things got worse for the home side as number three Ben Clifford was bowled by Kalley in the 5th over via an off-cutter.

James Clifford was next in for the hosts and with opener Dan Hagen the two were looking good, seeing off nearly seven overs together but on the last ball of the 12th over J.

Robert Catchpole was next to join Hagen at the crease but only a handful of runs were added to the score before the next wicket was claimed by Wanstead.

However, Oliver Devenish teamed up with Catchpole and an extremely important partnership blossomed between the two.

Devenish orchestrated another essential middle order partnership after Jack Cook’s introduction to the game.
Devenish secured his half century off 66 balls in the 42nd over after spending 89 minutes at the crease and hitting six 4s.

With 43 overs gone Chelmsford were 177/6 with two overs left of their innings.

The visitors took their next wicket in the penultimate over as Brad Green was bowled by Shahzad for 4 off 4.

Wanstead started their innings similarly to Chelmsford as they lost their opening batsman in the 3rd over after Tom Simmons played one into the hands of Dan Hagen off Keaney’s delivery.

Adnan Akram joined R.

J.

The next over saw another wicket fall when Arfan Akram was bowled by Devenish for a duck after facing six balls and Wanstead fell to 131/5 after 30 overs.
Wanstead had something to celebrate when R.

Ellis-Grewal joined R.

After witnessing a plethora of batsmen fall, R.

R.

Four balls after Kalley’s wicket was taken, Chelmsford claimed the 9th wicket when Keaney had Shahzad trapped LBW for 3 off 3.
Wanstead were 177/9 after 42 overs and required 16 runs to win from 3 overs at a run-rate of just over 5, or exactly 5 to draw.

With Chelmsford edging closer to victory and only needing one wicket to reach it, Wanstead’s last wicket stand aimed to see off the remaining three overs whilst scoring 5 runs per over.

After this brilliantly close finish and entertaining match between Chelmsford and Wanstead, the 2021 title belongs to Chelmsford with Wanstead and Brentwood to battle it out for second place on the last game of the season.

2nd XI vs Oakfield Parkonians (Away) – League.

Oakfield Parkonians 169/8 all out from 40 overs.
Chelmsford 171/5 from 36.

Chelmsford won by 5 wickets.

The 2's confirmed the League title with yet another Plan A game plan executed in the usual 2's manner, although that is not to say that there were not moments of anxious doubt, knowing that the first target was 7 wickets to secure the 3 bonus points that would clinch the title.

Cran won the the toss and stuck OP's in.

The opening batsmen moved to 33 without loss in 8 overs off Harry Arnold (4-0-13-0) and Fergs the Venerable (8-1-28-0).

Cran, visibly oozing unimpressedness, replaced Harry with Rob Hayto's off-spin, which proved effective with the score on 50, the belligerent Bhavik departing for 31, well caught by the Venerable One at deep mid-wicket.

A second wicket followed a few overs later, when Cran scurried from short mid-wicket to shortish mid-on, to catch the new batsman off Tom Halsey (8-0-25-1) who had replaced Rob Hayto (3-0-17-1) harshly removed by Cran because he had only taken one wicket in 3 overs.

During the drinks break, Cran no doubt again forcefully delivered his "must do better!

Nevertheless another 12 overs were to be bowled and 47 runs added before the third wicket fell and the first of the required 3 bowling points notched up.

Having given Lids (6-0-25-0) a bowl without success, Cran turned to Rish's pace, which produced an immediate wicket in his first over, caught behind by Nick Bailey.

Still 3 wickets needed to get the required 2 bowling points.

One of these came in the 34th over, when Rish bowled the new batsman in his third over.

And Rish repeated the trick, bowling the next batsman in his next over.

Just 2 balls of the 40 overs remained when it happened.

Harry's throw was fast and flat into Nick Baileys gloves who smartly took off the bails, with the batsman out by yards.

Cue the the whoops of exultation, and a quick team huddle to savour the moment, before Rish (6-0-24-4) bowled the next man off the last ball to leave the innings score on 169-8.

The 2's trooped triumphantly off to applause from the little band of travelling supporters.

Rob Hayto opened the reply with Harry Page (12), who was caught at slip in the sixteenth over with the score on 78.

Nick was the new batsman, but soon lost partner Rob Hayto, caught behind for a brilliantly destructive 77 off 67 (11x4 2x6).

101-3 off 19, 69 needed off 19.

Lids (2) went out and came back a couple of overs later.

Cran and Nick added 58 in in the 12 overs to take the team to the brink of victory, but Cran was caught trying to finish matters.

Fergs (0*) joined Nick, who hit the winning 4 two balls later.

Job done.

Of course, Wanstead won again but Chelmsford remain 37 points clear.

In the last league game of the season, Chelmsford host Wanstead at Chelmer next week, in what is nevertheless likely to be the most closely contested match of the season.

Wouldn't it be great to finish in style and remain unbeaten and maybe 50 points clear?

Congratulations to Sterls (1,001 league runs) and the Firsts, who beat closest challengers, Wanstead by 2 runs with 2 balls remaining to confirm their Premiership in style.

1's and 2's - DOUBLE ESSEX PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!

3rd XI vs Ilford (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 150 all out from 38.
Ilford 153/3 from 28.

Ilford won by 7 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Andrew Rycroft – 64* (nine 4s).
- Ed Cole – 20 (two 4s).
- Miles Clark – 17 (three 4s).

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Rory Skepelhorn – 8 overs, 1 maiden, 35 runs and 1 wicket.
- Adam Derham – 7 overs, 1 maiden, 37 runs and 1 wicket.

4th XI vs Loughton (Away) – League.

Loughton 122 all out from 39.
Chelmsford 210/6 from 40 overs

Chelmsford won by 88 runs.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Jordan Campion – 63 runs.
- Nigel Guy – 59 runs.
- Mohammed Ahmed – 18 runs.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Ben Lawrence – 7 overs, 4 maidens, 7 runs and 4 wickets.
- Neil Siriwardana – 7 overs, 2 maidens, 22 runs and 3 wickets.
- Steve Bond – 7.

5th XI vs Leigh-on-Sea 3rd XI (Away) – League.

Leigh-on-Sea 177 all out from 38 overs.
Chelmsford 198/9 from 40 overs.

Chelmsford won by 21 runs.

A terrific performance from Anish Nikam with a maiden league fifty and four wickets was the key to an enjoyable win over Leigh's third team.

Suhail Shahid (38) with support from Aditya Kuzhupilly (22) got the innings off to a positive start before the innings faltered first against spin and then Humpage (2-17).

Nikam had settled in and shared good partnerships with Charlie Hagger and James Fergus.

The innings closed at 198, Elliott returning three for 34 but that looked a good score in the conditions.

With opening bowlers Tom Hutchinson and Anis Rahman removing the openers there was a good start in the field.

Leigh captain Threadgold proved good support and the fourth wicket partnership flourished.

The bowler causing most difficulties was Nikam and he was eventually rewarded with the wicket of Threadgold (49) and soon had a second wicket stumped by Andy Rodgers.

The game ended in a rush 2 overs later with three wickets in 3 balls, Nikam (4-26) taking two sandwiching a run out by Alex Bailey.

With one game left Chelmsford will finish 6th or 7th in the league, a decent return for the only fifth team in the league which includes 3 third teams.

6th XI vs Mathews CC (Home) – Friendly.

Chelmsford 190/9 dec from 39.
Mathews 169/9 from 40 overs.

Chelmsford won by 21 runs.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Tejas Ramnath – 60.
- Rupert Redman – 58.
- Priyantha Siriwardana – 17.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Oakley Bromfield – 8 overs, 28 runs and 2 wickets.
- Freddie Ryan – 7 overs, 1 maiden, 30 runs and 2 wickets.
- Abraham Kurian – 5 overs, 17 runs and 1 wicket.
- Harvey Smith – 5 overs, 18 runs and 1 wicket.
- Tejas Ramnath – 2 overs, 12 runs and 1 wicket.

Match reports 21st August

1s & 2s on the brink of glory, super 3s maintain title charge!

1st XI vs Hadleigh & Thundersley (Away) – League.

Hadleigh 171/9 from 45 overs.
Chelmsford 201/8 from 45 overs.

Chelmsford win by 30 runs.

Hadleigh & Thundersley Cricket Club hosted Chelmsford CC in the sixteenth round of fixtures in the Essex Premier Division on Saturday.

Chelmsford captain Jack Sterland won the toss and elected to bat first.

17 overs into the 45 over match, Sterland reached his half century coming off just 55 balls, prompting a ripple of applause from spectators and players.

However, the 18th over saw the hosts take their first wicket as Hagen chipped one to mid-off into the hands of Richard Revell from the bowling of Handley, meaning Hagen had to depart for 18 off 50.

Hadleigh didn’t stop there though and things got worse for Chelmsford when Sterland nicked behind to keeper Darius Vapiwala off Poynter’s bowling in the next over.

Brothers Ben and James Clifford were the batting pair for the visitors and the two were looking well together.

Oliver Devenish joined J.

Brad Green now joined J.

With 4 overs of the first innings left, Liam Keaney joined Green and the two put on an important 20 before Green was run out on the penultimate ball of the innings.

Chelmsford finished on 201/8 after 45 overs and set Hadleigh & Thundersley the target of 202 to win after lunch.

Hadleigh’s openers D.

Alarmingly for the host’s, their reply of 201 started terribly as they lost their first three wickets in the first five overs!

Chelmsford’s electric start was very well halted by Handley and Jack Wagstaff as the pair stuck in and reached the end 12th over in which was the conclusion of the opening bowler’s spells.

The introduction of spin proved to be an instant success for Sterland and his side as J.

Hadleigh and Thundersley’s innings declined again as they lost their 5th wicket in the next over.

The fall of two quick wickets brought Adam Soilleux and Ruben Vapiwala to the crease and the pair nicely soaked up twelve overs together before Chelmsford claimed their next wicket.

Haider Ali Syed Zaidi joined Soilleux and the two portrayed some very good middle order batting for Hadleigh and Thundersley by picking the gaps and being rewarded with half a dozen boundaries.

Dobson linked up with Zaidi for the next six overs to bump their side up to 151 after an adequate 36 run partnership but the game looked twenty to thirty runs out of Hadleigh’s reach.

After smashing J.
Zaidi soon followed as Keaney had him hitting one into the hands of Hagen the ball after, which meant the number 8 exited for a fine 37 off 51.

With 5 balls remaining, Revell and Poynter were faced with an impossible target but remained unbeaten and Hadleigh’s innings finished on 171/9 after 45 overs.

2nd XI vs Chingford (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 176/3 from 34.
Chingford 175 all out from 39.

Chelmsford won by 7 wickets.

With this win, another pretty emphatic one, the 2's all but laid claim to the 2nd XI Premiership title and will surely confirm this next Saturday away to lowly Oakfield Parkonians as a mere 3 bonus points is all that is required.

11 of the previous 12 wins this season have come when bowling first, and Saturday was no different.

Raw youth and steady maturity combined in the opening pair.
Rob relieved Rishi (4-0-36-2) and banished him to the outfield where he proceeded to be followed by the ball wherever he went, safely claiming 3 catches during the rest of the innings.

Harry Arnold, coming on as first change, was not quite so profligate, or as threatening.
Skipper Rob introduced spin, Stuey from the top end, himself from the bottom.

Nevertheless 97-3 for Chingford at the break, was a decent base on they could well potentially develop to a score of 200+.

Rob made a dent in that aspiration when having the number 5 caught (yes, by Rish) at mid-on.

In the thirtieth over, Rob's off spin really broke the back of the innings, when he had the set batsman Mirsa (51) well held overhead by Chids at cover.

140-5 off 30, 10 overs to go.

The rest of the wickets were picked off for just 35 in the last 10 overs to leave Chingford all out for 175, 2 balls inside the 40.

The returning Harry Arnold castled 9 and 10 to finish with (5.

Another face from the past, Miles Clark, made a welcome rare reappearance behind the stumps.

With the 2's confident that their batting power would be too much for Chingford's bowling, and that confidence proving to be not misplaced, the runs were were confidently knocked off with, er, confidence, and cricket-bats of course, with 5 overs to spare.
Hayto 37, Harry Page 50, Dutchy 35( in his last match of the season), Chids 30* and the omnipresent and ubiquitous Rish 8*.

Thanks, to Dave Chidley, for umpiring, and to our depleted band of faithful supporters (Cran Clan in Southwold this week).

Guess what!

And good luck to Sterls the Stupendous (995 league runs!

And to Rory and the 3's who are still top but may need to win both remaining games to win Div1.

Sorry, I am feeling a little giddy right now.

3rd XI vs Belhus (Away) – League.

Belhus 135 all out from 35.
Chelmsford 136/5 from 33.

Chelmsford won by 5 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Luke Wilson – 31.
- Matthew Cook – 29.
- Hugo Skepelhorn – 24.
- Pranay Gogia – 19 runs.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Matthew Cole – 8 overs, 3 maidens, 13 runs and 4 wickets.
- Abdul Baig – 7.
- Tanay Mukherjee – 7 overs, 37 runs and 2 wickets.
- Rory Skepelhorn – 6 overs, 29 runs and 1 wicket.

4th XI vs Harlow (Home) – League.
Chelmsford 175/8 from 40 overs.
Harlow 142 all out from 35.

Chelmsford win by 33 runs.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Nigel Guy – 62*.
- Paul Keaney – 47.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Ben Lawrence – 5.
- Henry Pearce – 8 overs, 23 runs and 2 wickets.
- Jordan Campion – 8 overs, 40 runs and 2 wickets.
- Dan Cornell – 6 overs, 2 maidens, 16 runs and 1 wicket.
- Usama Ahmed – 8 overs, 39 runs and 1 wicket.

5th XI vs Benfleet 3rd XI (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 177 all out from 36.
Benfleet 236/5 from 40 overs.

Chelmsford lose by 59 runs.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Mohammed Ahmed – 65*.
- Aditya Kuzhupilly – 35.
- Charlie Hagger – 29.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Mohammed Ahmed – 5 overs, 36 runs and 2 wickets.
- Anisur Rahman – 6 overs, 3 maidens, 12 runs and 2 wickets.
- Anish Nikam – 8 overs, 49 runs and 1 wicket.
- Charlie Hagger – 6 overs, 42 runs and 1 wicket.

Match Reports Saturday 14th August

2nd XI on the brink of title, 1s & 3s maintain title push!

1st XI vs Chingford (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 177/8 from 45 overs.
Chingford 63 all out from 28.

Chelmsford win by 114 runs.

Chelmsford Cricket Club claimed a comfortable victory against Chingford on Saturday in the Essex League Premier Division to move even closer to the league title.

Chelmsford’s captain, Jack Sterland, won the toss at Chelmer Park and elected to bat first with resident opening partner, Dan Hagen.

Things got worse for the home side as another wicket fell in the next over.

James Clifford joined Sterland and the two lasted a decent eight overs before Chingford claimed their third wicket.

J.

However, Stokoe cleaned up Devenish’s stumps in the 30th over to claim a wicket-maiden and the sixth wicket of the innings.

With Chelmsford at 85/6 after 30 overs, it was fair to say they were looking at a batting collapse, but luckily for them they still had the brilliantly inform Jack Sterland still at the crease.

In the 32nd over, Sterland reached 50 in 91 balls after 114 minutes of play and five 4s.

With two overs to go Sterland was eyeing up his century and after some intelligent running between the wickets from Liam Keaney and himself, the Chelmsford skipper claimed his 6th century of the season.

Chingford’s chase of 178 to win didn’t start in the way they’d hoped as Chelmsford seamer, Andy Styan, took the first wicket in the second over after Alex Agedah played one into the hands of J.

The visitor’s case to win the game worsened as Styan incredibly claimed two wickets in the 10th over, belonging to Dixon and Taylor.

Keaney stepped up to take the fifth wicket in the next over as Beard caught Baldock.

Lannen joined Simmons, but a partnership wouldn’t form as Waring bowled Lannen on the first ball of the 21st over.

Stokoe and new-in Latif would only put on a 4-run partnership as Waring claimed another wicket in the 25th over after Stokoe was caught by J.

The last wicket stand of Latif and Duke wasn’t prolific because Waring bowled Latif on the first ball of the 30th over to claim his 4th wicket of the game and victory for Chelmsford.
This win for Chelmsford means they are one step away from winning the league title with it firmly in their hands.

2nd XI vs Brentwood (Away) – League.

Brentwood 177/9 from 40 overs.
Chelmsford 178/5 from 35.

Chelmsford won by 5 wickets.

Cran won the toss and opted for Plan A as usual in sticking Brentwood in.

Opener, Jonathan Walford, former Brentwood 1sts with nearly 7,000 Premier League runs, but these days, only playing a couple of games a season.

Anyway, he looked different class and took Drainy for three 4's in 4 balls, early on.

With Walford dominating, Brentwood moved to 67 off 15.

Probably the pivotal moment of the match arrived in the second over after the break, when 2 balls into Rob's fourth over.

By now, Stuey was on at the other end, but his leg spin was attacked by Payne (32), who hit him for three 6's over the short long off boundary, before Stuey eventually had him caught there just inside by Dutchy.

Brentwood continued to score at a run a ball for the next 5 overs to reach 152 in the 34th over, whereupon Rob Hayto, ran out the number 6, by way of a misfiled at short midwicket, persuading the batsman to come back for two, but failing to beat Rob's direct hit on the stumps, 152-5, 6 overs left.

Lids (8-0-35-1) removed the belligerent number 4, Boon (36), caught by Dutchy, again at long on.

Brentwood 177-9 off 40, Drainy (8-1-38-4), Rob Hayto, (8-3-16-2), Stuey (7-0-50-1).

As the Brentwood wickets have reportedly been not up to their usual standard this season, it was hard to judge what was a 'par' score.

Both openers gone in the first 6 overs to leave Chelmsford on 21-2 was not promising, but Dutchy and Harry Page (10) added 36 in 9 overs.

58-3 off 15 was below where Brentwood had been at the same stage (67-1), but the challenge of 120 off 25 overs was tackled positively as Dutchy and Harry Arnold (21) added 47 in 8 overs, before Harry was bowled.

Nick Bailey (34*) joined Dutchy, and the pair added 41 in 9 overs, before Dutchy was bowled for 61, (his first 50 of the season).

The target was now down to 31 off 9 overs, and Nick, and Cran (11*) plundered the required runs in just half of those overs to complete the win by 5 wickets with 4.

A big thank you to Felix Gruijters for umpiring this one, having been prevented from doing so last week by the rain-off against Woodford Wells, and also, once again to our little band of travelling support.

Momentum maintained.

Wanstead also won again, and remain 37 points behind, but the games are running out with just 3 left.

That would leave 'The Two's as Champions facing Wanstead in the last game at Fortress Chelmer, with the motivation of seeking to maintain an unbeaten league season to put the icing on the cake.

3rd XI vs Oakfield Parkonians (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 237/7 from 40 overs.
Oakfield Parkonians 142/9 from 40 overs.

Chelmsford won by 95 runs.

- Tanay Mukherjee – 7 overs, 21 runs and 1 wicket.

4th XI vs Hornchurch 4th XI (Away) – League.
Hornchurch 134/9 from 40 overs.
Chelmsford 135/7 from 34.

Chelmsford win by 3 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Michael Burns – 26*.
- Pranay Gogia – 21*.
- Paul Keaney – 18.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Shona Keaney – 8 overs, 2 maidens, 23 runs and 4 wickets.
- Henry Pearce – 7 overs, 2 maidens, 23 runs and 3 wickets.
- Dan Cornell – 8 overs, 1 maiden, 37 runs and 1 wicket.
- Usama Ahmed – 5 overs, 1 maiden, 24 runs and 1 wicket.

5th XI vs Hadleigh & Thundersley 3rd XI (Away) – League.

Hadleigh 167/4 from 30 overs.
Chelmsford 166/8 from 40 overs.

Chelmsford lose.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Ryan Cheverall – 7 overs, 1 maiden, 35 runs and 1 wicket.

6th XI vs Wickford 5th XI (Home) – Friendly.

Chelmsford 181/5 from 35 overs.
Wickford 138 all out from 33.

Chelmsford win by 43 runs.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Dinil Siriwardana – 52 (nine 4s).
- James Fergus – 38 (seven 4s).
- Oakley Bromfield – 27 (two 6s two 4s)

Chelmsford Bowling:
Match Reports, Saturday 31st July

Sterland 105, J.

1st XI vs Billericay (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 239/8 (dec) from 63.
Billericay 72 all out from 48 overs.

Chelmsford win by 167 runs.

Another Sterland Century as Chelmsford Defeat Billericay 10 Minutes Before Close of Play!

Saturday 31st July saw Chelmsford host Billericay in the 13th round of 1st XI Division One fixtures, with the hosts looking to win to stay top and the visitors needing a positive result to help push them away from a relegation battle.

One change from Chelmsford’s team that beat Harold Wood last week- Andy Styan is unavailable so James Liddiard replaces him.

Chelmsford won the toss and captain Jack Sterland elected to bat first.

Sterland opened with Dan Hagen after winning the toss and the pair were looking solid, reaching 25/0 after the first 8 overs.

B.
Sterland and B.

The incredible partnership of 120 runs in 35 overs built by the two was put to an end when B.

In the 53rd over Jack Sterland reached his century, his 5th of the season and making it back-to-back weeks after scoring 196 last week at Harold Wood.

J.

With Rob Catchpole and Jack Cook now at the crease, the hosts were looking to score quickly before a declaration as there was uneasy weather forecasted for Saturday afternoon.

Brad Green and Oliver Devenish were the two in for Chelmsford, but exactly like J.
Devenish was joined by Liam Keaney but the two wouldn’t combine for a lengthy partnership as Devenish was bowled by Poulton in the 63rd over for 10 runs off 15 balls.

With Chelmsford placing Billericay a score of 240 to win, it was down to the visitor’s openers, Nathan Khelawon and William Dale to start them off well.

Matthew Ball and David Houghton were the two batsmen in charge of reviving Billericay’s score but four overs after Dale’s wicket fell, Houghton’s did too.

Billericay captain Smith joined Ball at the crease and settled the early flow of wickets as he put on a 22-run partnership with Ball before the next wicket.

Emmanuel joined Ball but didn’t add any worthy runs as he edged one to Sterland at first slip from the bowling of J.

Obviously attempting to salvage a draw, Billericay’s number three Matthew Ball was very nicely seeing off the bowling attack that Chelmsford threw at him.

The wicket of Poulton opened the gates for two more in quick succession as the hosts were able to get the most vital wicket, which was Ball’s, in the delivery straight after Poulton’s departure.
Five balls later, Devenish zipped one through the gate which rattled the stumps to send Rayner back to the changing rooms.
A crucial double-wicket maiden from Devenish saw Billericay deflate to 72/9 with Chelmsford itching to claim the last wicket for victory with just 10 minutes of play left.

However, Billericay’s efforts to block out for a draw were squashed when J.

2nd XI vs Shenfield (Away) – League.

Shenfield 129 all out from 41.
Chelmsford 133/3 from 26.

Chelmsford won by 7 wickets.

Midday Saturday, and a green grassy strip awaits at Shenfield

Cran wins the toss and naturally sticks them in.

Mark Drain and Harry Arnold are the opening bowlers, and the latter strikes first in the eighth over, removing one of the openers courtesy of a Rob Hayto catch at slip.

Drainy then has opener Walton (27) well caught on the run by Rishi Upadhyay at mid-on, and takes another wicket in his next over, Stuey, taking the catch at gully, diving forward.

Fergs (5-0-18-0) has no joy when replacing Harry (5-0-17-1), and as Drainy has had no further success, Cran turns to spin.

New boy, Adam Derham, in his second over, removes the increasingly aggressive No.
And another wicket is claimed by Adam with a successful LBW appeal.

But a steady drizzle has now set in and the players are forced off.

In the first over after the restart, Stuey (7-1-17-1) has the new batsman caught by Fergs off a skied mishit to mid-on.

Shenfield's No.

Cran calls up Tom Halsey (1.

Adam Derham finishes with figures of 11-6-24-4.

Because Shenfield were dismissed with 3 unused overs remaining, Chelmsford will have a minimum of 45 overs in which to score the 130 required for victory.

Cognisant of the possible return of rain, Chelmsford resolve to proceed positively, and the runs are knocked off before the last hour in just 27 overs, losing only 3 wickets in the process.

Harry Arnold 46* in 34 balls, and Cran 10* are the not out batsmen.

Momentum maintained.

Wanstead have had a 20 point win so Chelmsford remain top by 37 points with 5 games left.

Next week, The 2's host Woodford Wells 2's at Chelmer.

3rd XI vs Frenford (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 137/7 from 37 overs.
Frenford 173/3 dec from 41 overs.

Match drawn.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Matthew Cook – 32.
- Hugo Skepelhorn – 29.
- Phil Arnold – 18.
- Nick Bailey – 18.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Tanay Mukherjee – 6 overs, 21 runs and 2 wickets.
- Rory Skepelhorn – 12 overs, 3 maidens, 37 runs, 1 wicket.
- Steve Bond – 5 overs, 38 runs and 1 wicket.

4th XI vs Old Southendian 3rd XI (Away) – League.
Old Southendian 95 all out from 29.
Chelmsford 97/2 from 32.

Chelmsford win by 8 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Paul Keaney – 39*.
- Barry Clayden – 31*.
- Jordan Campion – 13.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Shona Keaney – 14.
- Usama Ahmed – 8 overs, 3 maidens, 21 runs and 3 wickets.
- Dan Cornell – 7 overs, 1 maiden, 21 runs and 1 wicket.

5th XI vs Orsett & Thurrock 4th XI (Away) – League.

Orsett 65 all out from 36.
Chelmsford 225/7 (dec) from 44 overs.

Chelmsford win by 160 runs.

An excellent century from Aditya Kuzhupilly led the way for the 5th team for a comprehensive win.

The pitch showed early signs of indifferent bounce and Flain grabbed three wickets on his opening spell.

Charlie Hagger (26) played positively and by this point Kuzhupilly was playing with great authority, completing his unbeaten century and ending on 103.

Chelnsford's opening bowlers Anis Rehman and Ryan Cheverall exploited the conditions well to undermine the reply.

Rehman's (3-16) accuracy was rewarded with three of the next four wickets, the other a needless run out.

The last pair had other ideas and dug in to resist for 12 overs.

This was a very satisfying and positive performance from Chelmsford.

Match reports 24th July

Sterland Stars with sensational 196

1st XI vs Harold Wood (Away) – League.

Harold Wood 85 all out from 32.
Chelmsford 311/4 (dec) 53.

Chelmsford win by 226 runs.

Captain Leading from the Front - Sterland’s Glorious 196 Gives Chelmsford a Comfortable Win vs Harold Wood.

A phenomenal innings of 196 from Chelmsford captain Jack Sterland helped record an easy win against Harold Wood in the 12th round of fixtures.

Saturday 24th July saw Chelmsford take a trip up the A12 for a visit to Harold Wood in the 1st XI Division Essex League.

The weather forecast looked like it wasn’t going to be too friendly for a game of cricket, but alas no rain occurred, and the two teams were able to start at the correct time of 11am.

Harold Wood began very well with the ball and claimed an early wicket in the 4th over when Dan Hagen was caught by Hassan Malik from the bowling of Dan Carter, meaning that the opener had to depart for a duck after facing just five balls.

Older brother of Ben, James, was next in and set his eyes on building a worthy partnership with Sterland but five overs later their plans were foiled.

After seeing the back of three batting partners, Sterland was joined by Robert Catchpole and the pair needed to put on a strong partnership to: firstly, put their side in a more comfortable position, secondly, put the pressure back on Harold Wood and finally ease off any temptation of a middle order batting collapse which has been witnessed many times this season for Chelmsford.

It was clear Sterland and Catchpole were reading off the same hymn sheet as the pair looked solid in defence and attacked when the bowlers delivered a bad ball.

In the 22nd over, Sterland reached a well-orchestrated half century from 69 balls which included ten 4s!

The home side threw seam and spin at both batsman but couldn’t make a breakthrough as the visitors reached 150/3 in the 36th over after 139 minutes of play.

It was fair to say Chelmsford’s batsmen were fully under control at this point and in the 42nd over the away side reached 200 runs without losing a fourth wicket- 200/3 after 158 minutes of play.

After praises were given to Sterland for his mesmerizing display and the batsmen as a pair, plaudits were given to Catchpole singularly in the 48th over after he reached 50 runs from 88 balls which included seven 4s.

Seven balls after Catchpole reached his half century, Chelmsford placed themselves on a score of 250/3 after 48.
Again, with Harold Wood unable to break through the unbelievably tight defences of Sterland and Catchpole, Chelmsford reached 300/3 in the 53rd over, after exactly three and a quarter hours of play.

Sadly, for the Chelmsford faithful but to the delight of the Harold Wood players, Sterland was bowled out in the 54th over by Taqi Abbas after attempting to send one to the boundary in hope of reaching his double century.
So, with Sterland unable to reach 200 and a threat of rain, Chelmsford declared on 311/4, setting Harold Wood the target of 312 to win or batting out the rest of the day for a draw.

Harold Wood’s opening pair of Hamzah Ikram and Shahzad Hafeez were tasked with setting their side off to a good start in reply of Chelmsford’s above par score of 311.

Craig Perrin was next in at number three for the home side but was instantly sent back to the changing room after being judged LBW from Andy Styan’s first delivery of the day.

Disappointingly for the hosts, Hafeez would not put on a partnership with Bennett as the opener was brilliantly caught by Oliver Devenish in the slips from the bowling of Keaney.

After three wickets tumbled in each of the first three overs, Khan joined Bennett with the initial aim of not making it four wickets from four overs and the main task to plug the fall of wickets and somewhat turn their disastrous start it into a healthy innings for the home side.

To a certain extent, Bennett and Khan managed to do so but not to the extent that would see them with a more comfortable score.

With more than half of the home side’s batsmen departing for a golden duck, the pressure was on Malik, to not only survive the hat-trick ball but to not make it four golden ducks of Harold Wood’s innings.

Chelmsford were getting into a rhythm, especially Keaney with his bowling and Devenish with his fantastic catching at second slip, so a difficult objective of somewhat reviving Harold Wood’s innings was placed on the shoulders of batsmen Malik and Ausman Ginai.
The pair nearly survived eight overs together when Ben Waring claimed his first wicket of the day on the last ball of the 21st over.

Abbas joined Ginai and the pair looked comfortable against the spin attack of J.

From this, the hosts were no longer taking to spin easily and in the over after Ginai’s departure, J.

The visitors wrapped up the game just seven balls later when Carter was caught by J.

This victory for Chelmsford keeps them at the top of the table, 13 points in-front of second placed Wanstead with a chance to keep top spot should they get a positive result next week when they host Billericay at Chelmer Park.

2nd XI vs Ilford (Away) – League.

Chelmsford 165/4 from 33.
Ilford 164 all out from 45.

Chelmsford won by 6 wickets.

12.

Ilford win the toss and choose to bat on a surprisingly dry hard strip.

Nair (27) and Ul-Haq (45) start very positively and after 8 overs, Ilford are on 47-0, having seen already seen off Rishi Upadhyay (2-0-23-0) and Harry Arnold (2-0-15-0).

Cran brings Fergs on at the top end!

The scoring rate is slowed somewhat as Ilford advance to 73-1 off 15 overs.
(7-1-15-1) and Fergs (4-0-19-0), and introduce spin, in the form of Rob Hayto's off-spin from the bottom end and Stuart Everard's leg-spin from the top.

And then, in the 23rd over Stuey takes 2 wickets in 2 balls.

After half-way drinks at 25 overs, 99-3, Cran brings on Tom Halsey in place of Rob Hayto (5-1-16-0).

Ilford skipper Bhogal (29) and Patel (23) combine sensibly to add another 34 in 8 overs, and then the innings implodes, as the returning Drainy bowls Bhogal, and the tail is skittled, by Drainy and Tom, the last 5 wickets going down for 13 in 21 balls.

Ilford are dismissed for 164, four overs short of their allocation of 50.

Drainy's second spell (2-1-5-3) gives him overall figures of (9-2-20-4).

So Chelmsford's target is 165 off 49 overs.

And so it proves as Hayto (49), plays the anchor role (and the jug avoidance card) as Harry Page (20), Gary Chidley (15), and Rishi, (44) along with 29 extras, mainly byes, take Chelmsford to the brink of victory.

Congratulations to Sterls for his fantastic 196, Catchy, (isn't he actually the 2's captain and keeper?

Momentum maintained.

And it is to Shenfield that the 2's travel to next week intent on 'maintaining that momentum'.

3rd XI vs Buckhurst Hill (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 254/7 (dec) from 46 overs.
Buckhurst Hill 69 all out from 30 overs.

Chelmsford win by 185 runs.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Matthew Cook – 79.
- Luke Wilson – 63.
- Hugo Skepelhorn – 28.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Matthew Cook – 7 overs, 2 maidens, 15 runs, 5 wickets.
- Tanay Mukherjee – 7 overs, 3 maidens, 10 runs, 2 wickets.
- Rory Skepelhorn – 8 overs, 5 maidens, 10 runs, 1 wicket.
- Abdul Baig – 8 overs, 2 maidens, 29 runs, 1 wicket.

4th XI vs Brentwood 4th XI (Away) – League.
Brentwood 110/5 from 27.
Chelmsford 109 all out from 44 overs.

Chelmsford lose by 5 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Paul Keaney – 33.
- Jordan Campion – 20.
- Henry Pearce – 10*.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Shona Keaney – 12 overs, 3 maidens, 43 runs and 2 wickets.
- Aditya Kuzhupilly – 5 overs, 18 runs, 2 wickets.

5th XI vs Hutton 4th XI (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 192/9 from 45 overs.
Hutton 196/5 from 36.

Chelmsford lose by 5 wickets.

The fifth team continued their campaign to literally drop out of Division 13 with another shambolic fielding display.

Suhail Shahid (48) struck the ball well to give the innings impetus and Dave Hutchinson (39) provided good support.

Freddie Abbott (4-9) was particularly successful but from 126 for seven, Matt Spinks (32) and Andy Rodgers put together a good partnership.

Despite some good bowling from Ryan Cheverall, Verma (39) and Fitzgerald (27) put together a strong opening partnership.

However, the theme of the rest of the match was set between these two events as number 3 Crispin was dropped on a very straightforward catch off the back of Oakley’s bowling.

Lawrence (3-42) continued to cause problems but some expensive overs at the other end meant insufficient pressure was retained.

Things are still very much in Chelmsford's hands, unfortunately evidence suggests nothing stays there long.

Presidents Day

1st XI draw with MCC, Bob's teammates triumph in memorial game.

Sunday 25th July saw a fantastic Presidents Day for Brian Poole, where the weather thankfully stayed away long enough to see plenty of cricket, we were also delighted to welcome club Sponsors Stansted Labs & Carl Page in attendance as guests.

The MCC visited and played out a high scoring draw with the first team, MCC won the toss and batted first scoring 259/7 with Luke Kirsten scoring 100, Harry Shirt 84 with Andy Styan the pick of the bowlers taking 3-33.

Jack Sterland continued his phenomenal form hitting 84 from 73 balls, Dan Hagen supported the innings well with 71.

<iframe allow="attribution-reporting" aria-label="Advertisement" data-google-container-id="3" data-gtm-yt-inspected-31="true" data-is-safeframe="true" data-load-complete="true" frameborder="0" height="250" id="google_ads_iframe_/124312541,2820490/Pitchero/inarticle_mpu1_0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" name="" role="region" sandbox="allow-forms allow-popups allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-top-navigation-by-user-activation" scrolling="no" src="https://f2315feecf88aa3d0a3a980726ef72fe.

A big thanks to the MCC for visiting and playing their part in an entertaining game!

As part of Presidents we celebrated the life of Chelmsford legend Bob Shortman, Bob sadly passed away this year but his memory and legacy will stay with the club and all those that knew him forever.

The teammates batted first and posted 160 with David Thrift, Dave Hinsley & Paul Jones all rolling back the years showing that class is indeed permanent by scoring their 30 and retiring.

The coached by Bob team got off to a blistering start with Neal Abhyankar & Imran Akhtar smashing their quick 30's and retiring.

Barry Clayden & Nick Bailey who was captain of Bob's under 15's team both spoke beautifully about Bob and we were delighted to see the game played out in front of a large crowd, the day went extremely well and it was fantastic to see such a big crowd with lots of old faces turning up in support and to pay their respects to Bob.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers who made the day so special, as someone of volunteered so much of their own time to the cricket club, we certainly feel that Bob would have been proud of the day and have everyone come together.

Match Reports 19th June

James Clifford’s Fifer, Chidley’s 62 and Abdul Baig’s Six-fer Steer respective teams to victory

1st XI vs Hadleigh & Thundersley (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 123/9 from 49.
Hadleigh 75 all out from 26.

Chelmsford win by 48 runs.

Chelmsford Beat Second Place Hadleigh to Extend Lead at the Top of Premier Division!

On Saturday 19th June, league leaders Chelmsford hosted second place Hadleigh & Thundersley's in a crucial top of the table clash between first and second place.

The toss was taken at 10:30 am between the two captains and Hadleigh & Thundersley won it and elected to field first at Chelmer Park, with the start of play beginning at 11am.

Chelmsford openers Jack Sterland and Dan Hagen got their side off to a strong start, reaching a score of 30/0 in their first 10 overs, with Hagen playing some expansive shots that rewarded him with some early boundaries.

In stepped Nick Prowting to join up with his captain and immediately the pair looked comfortable together as they have done all season.

In the 27th over captain Sterland reached his half century and shortly after, himself and J.

Jack Cook joined Sterland but the pair only managed 14 runs between them when Sterland was out caught by Darius Vapiwala off the bowling of Samuel Handley on the final ball before lunch.

The new batsman, Ben Clifford, had to face one ball from Handley at the resumption after lunch but guided one to slip fielder Luke Smith and was out for a duck on his first ball.

Zaidi followed Handley's double-wicket over with a good maiden and Brad Green was the Chelmsford batsman to face the hat-trick ball.

Oliver Devenish joined J.

Hadleigh's innings got off to the worst of starts when Hagen caught Paul Tibbenham off the bowling of Styan in the 2nd over and the visitors at 4/1.

In the 15th over Hadleigh reached 47/3 after an acceleration of runs from the away side which included a few boundaries in hope of swinging the momentum their way.

Jack Wagstaff and Luke Smith were the pair at the crease for the visitors but they only put on an 11-run partnership when Devenish caught Wagstaff out with a great reflex catch in the slip cordon off the bowling of Waring in the 21st over.

In the next over, the 25th of Hadleigh's innings, Waring claimed a wicket-maiden (his second of the day) when he had Adam Dobson chipping one up to J.

This win for Chelmsford means that they are now ten points clear at the top of the league with 125 points, Hornchurch move up to second place and Hadleigh & Thundersley drop down to fourth place on 94 points.

2nd XI vs Chingford (Away) – League.

Chingford 147 all out from 49.
Chelmsford 148/5 from 31 overs.

Chelmsford win by 5 wickets.

After the heavy rain on Thursday and Friday, Chingford CC was looking decidedly soggy when the 2's arrived on Saturday to find a a less than enthusiastic groundsman still working on a strip which was rather wet at one end.

A collective sigh of relief was released when acting skipper Cran, in Catchy's absence, won the toss and put winless Chingford in.

Harry Arnold and Mark Drain, both opened with maidens, before Harry struck first in his third over, with Cran, also acting wicketkeeper, snaffling a thin snick behind.

By now Fergs had replaced Drainy (5-0-16-0) and was settling into a very economical spell which included a wicket, another catch by Chids at cover, in the eighteenth over, to leave Chingford struggling at 44-4.

Lids (5-0-23-0) was not able to emulate Fergs' economy from the other end and Cran next opted to introduce Stuey's legspin.
(Genius decision, Cran).

Fergs (10-6-10-1) had all but sealed up the other end, bowling five consecutive maidens, but upon conceding a boundary of the final ball of his tenth over, Cran replaced him with Tom Halsey.

Tom's first over, however, provided a wicket, in the form of a runout by Drainy at cover.

32 overs, Chingford 86-6.

Next over, Stuey (12-1-37-2) had the next man caught first ball by Drainy at cover, whereupon Shortt started to chance his arm, hitting both Stuey and Tom for 6's.

New Chelmsford recruit, Leo Dolan ran out the the number 10 with an accurate throw from long on to Tom at the bowlers end.

Cran sent out Dutchy and Harry Page to open.

Chids (62, 9x4 1x6) and Harry Arnold (38, 5x4) combined positively in a decisive partnership of 93 in 15 overs.
Leo Dolan (1) was given lbw, before Cran (4) and successive boundaries from Fergs (8) completed the win with 14 overs to spare.

Chelmsford lead the table (from Wanstead by 27 points) and need to consolidate this by beating OP's next week as the following week we are away to Wanstead.

3rd XI vs Belhus (Home) – League.

Belhus 142 all out from 48.
Chelmsford 145/5 from 35.

Chelmsford win by 5 wickets.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Abdul Baig – 12.
- Tanay Mukherjee – 6 overs, 3 maidens, 9 runs, 3 wickets.
- Rory Skepelhorn – 8 overs, 17 runs, 1 wicket.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Pranay Gogia – 37 *not out*.
- Andrew Rycroft – 37.
- Hugo Skepelhorn – 18.
- Luke Wilson – 17.

Man of the Match: Abdul Baig – 12.

4th XI vs Harlow (Away) – League.
Chelmsford 126 all out from 47 overs.
Harlow 128/5 from 32 overs.

Harlow win by 5 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Nigel Guy – 29.
- Jack Campion – 25.
- Barry Claydon – 18.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Charlie Hagger – 3 overs, 12 runs, 2 wickets.
- Usama Ahmed – 10 overs, 1 maiden, 48 runs, 2 wickets.
- Henry Pearce – 3 overs, 15 runs, 1 wicket.

5th XI vs Benfleet 3rd XI (Away) – League.

Chelmsford 169/7 off 44 overs.
Benfleet 204/5 from 45 overs.

Match drawn.

A slightly disappointing match but there were creditable performances and good character shown.

On a slow pitch Chelmsford found it difficult to make inroads.

Hiscox (28) gave the innings some impetus before a century stand between Jarrett (70) and Luke Whitbourn (54) with the 13 year old Whitbourn playing increasingly well especially after being given a life.

Brian Kaludewa was once again the pick of the bowlers and there were wickets for Tom Hutchinson, Aditya Kuzhupilly, Matt Spinks and Neil Siriwardana.

Some tight bowling brought about a couple of wickets and the chase did not get going in the early stages.

Towards the final hour Benfleet started to show some urgency with Connelly (2-54) bowling with some enterprise and a fast over rate.

Arnold (41) realised a draw was the best that could be achieved and started to play defensively.

Three more wickets fell in the closing stages and Kaludewa had two lives but a draw was achieved.

Match Reports 17th July

JC stars for 1st XI, Rishabh & Harry hit Maiden 2nd XI Century's & Half Centuries, Ben Lawrence spins 8fa!

1st XI vs Hornchurch (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 167/6 from 45.
Hornchurch 164 all out from 54.

Chelmsford win by 4 wickets.

First Place Chelmsford Beat Second Place Hornchurch to Stay Top!

Saturday 17th July hosted a vital match in the 1st XI Division 1 Essex League, as first placed Chelmsford hosted second placed Hornchurch at Chelmer Park.

Chelmsford Team News:

Captain Jack Sterland made two changes to his side that defeated Colchester at Castle Park last week.

Hornchurch's lineup can be seen on the right side of the graphic below, with Billy Gordon leading as captain and Paul Murray JNR with the gloves for the away side.

Weather conditions were near enough perfect for cricket on Saturday (which hasn't been said many times this year).

Hornchurch’s openers looked like they were getting off to a solid start, surviving the first nine overs without loss with the score at a steady 26/0.

This meant that Ronnie Saunders and Paul Murray were the two batsmen at the crease and the pair put on a quick 20-run partnership in five overs, which included four 4s, to put the visitors at a more comfortable score of 52/2 after 16 overs.

Merv Westfield joined Saunders at the crease and the two lasted a decent nine overs with a 29-run partnership before the next wicket.

Adeel Malik was the next Hornchurch batsman in but only lasted four overs as he was bowled by J.

Hornchurch captain Billy Gordan joined a well settled Westfield and the pair put on a much-needed partnership for the visitors.

Luke Edwards joined Westfield and the new batsman helped Merv reach his half century.

Edwards however wouldn’t add much to the score as he was bowled by J.

Marc Whitlock was next in with Westfield, but the partnership only lasted three overs as J.

The Chelmsford spinner didn’t stop there though, two balls later he claimed the wicket of new batsman Joe Defreitas and an incredible double-wicket maiden.

Chelmsford wrapped up Hornchurch’s innings eight balls later when Dan Hagen caught Whitlock out from the bowling of that man again, James Clifford.
James Clifford was the star bowler for Chelmsford with figures of 5 maidens, 47 runs and 7 wickets off 16.

So, a target of 165 to win was set by Hornchurch and Chelmsford began their chase towards the total with the usual opening pair of Jack Sterland and Dan Hagen.

B.

At 70/2, the two Clifford brothers joined each-other at the crease and J.

J.
Chelmsford were 121/4 off 35 overs.

Hornchurch then went on to rattle the nerves of the Chelmsford camp after claiming two wickets in the over after J.

Devenish joined Catchpole and it was obvious that the two needed to plug the quick falling rate of wickets and put the pressure back on the away side.

This result meant that Chelmsford were awarded 20 points from the game and Hornchurch just the 4 points.

Next week Chelmsford are away to bottom placed Harold Wood, Wanstead visit second from bottom Billericay and Hornchurch host sixth-placed Colchester.
Should either Chelmsford or Wanstead surprisingly fail to defeat their opposition next Saturday, the race for the title will be blown wide open!

2nd XI vs Hornchurch (Away) – League.

Hornchurch 158 all out from 49.
Chelmsford 159/0 from 30.

Chelmsford won by 10 wickets.

Unfortunately, we’re without ‘Numbers’ match report for this game.

As it turned out, the target score of 158 would easily be chased down- without losing a single wicket!

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Mark Drain – 13 overs, 2 maidens, 27 runs and 4 wickets.
- Tom Halsey – 13.
- Leo Dolan – 5 overs, 2 maidens, 10 runs and 1 wicket.
- Adam Derham – 10 overs, 33 runs and 1 wicket.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Rishabh Upadhyay – 101*.
- Harry Page – 54*.

3rd XI vs Loughton (Away) – League.

Loughton 178/7 from 50 overs.
Chelmsford 182/3 from 27 overs.

Chelmsford win by 7 wickets.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Abdul Baig – 13 overs, 2 maidens, 52 runs and 3 wickets.
- Steve Bond – 5 overs, 11 runs, 1 wicket.
- Matthew Cook – 8 overs, 27 runs and 1 wicket.
- Usama Ahmed – 11 overs, 1 maiden, 44 runs and 1 wicket.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Phil Arnold – 51*.
- Hugo Skepelhorn – 53.
- Matthew Cook – 30.
- Andrew Rycroft – 8.

4th XI vs Chingford 3rd XI (Home) – League.
Chelmsford 142 all out from 46 overs.
Chingford 62 all out from 25 overs.

Chelmsford win by 80 runs.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Barry Clayden – 40.
- Henry Pearce – 28*.
- Jack Campion – 16.
- Ben Turner – 16.
- Shona Keaney – 16.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Shona Keaney – 12 overs, 4 maidens, 28 runs and 6 wickets.
- Dan Cornell – 7 overs, 2 maidens, 22 runs and 3 wickets.
- Charlie Hagger – 2 overs, 6 runs and 1 wicket.

5th XI vs Horndon on the Hill 3rd XI (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 252/7 (dec) from 43 overs.
Horndon on the Hill 253/9 from 36.

A superb bowling display from Ben Lawrence was not quite enough as Horndon won an exciting match by 1 wicket.

Chelmsford's batting had finally shown some quality with excellent half centuries from Aditya Kuzhupilly and Alex Bailey leading the way.

Mo Ahmed (24) provided decent support but as he passed 30 Kuzhupilly really found his touch and got the scoreboard moving quickly.

At 180 for seven the innings might have subsided but instead it soared with Bailey making a scintillating unbeaten 58, his fifty coming from just 25 balls.

Some scrappy early bowling helped Horndon get going with plenty of loose balls for Shah and Salahudin to feast on.

After six lives, Shah (66) was bowled by Lawrence at 128.

The batsmen all played in adventurous fashion and Lawrence kept taking wickets.

In for Hutton will provide a strong challenge next week.

Match Reports 26th June

1st XI collapse to first league defeat of the season, Halsey stars in 2nd XI win & draws galore

1st XI vs Wanstead & Snaresbrook (Away) – League.

Chelmsford 117 all out from 45.
Wanstead 121/2 from 30.

Chelmsford lose by 8 wickets.

Wanstead Win Comfortably to Give Chelmsford First League Loss of Season!

On Saturday, Wanstead & Snaresbrook Cricket Club hosted Chelmsford Cricket Club in the eighth round of league fixtures.

Chelmsford won the toss and elected to bat first, with start of play at the time of 11am.

Two overs later, Wanstead and Kalley claimed their second wicket when Ben Waring was adjudged LBW by the umpire for 0 at the end of the 7th over.

In the over that proceeded J.

Robert Catchpole and Ben Clifford were the visiting batsmen at the crease but after just an 11 run-partnership, B.

Catchpole was joined by Oliver Devenish and the pair survived five overs together until Catchpole was caught behind by Das off the bowling of Velani; the bowler claiming his fourth wicket.

Liam Keaney and Devenish were tasked with a mammoth mission of digging in and pulling the away side out of serious trouble and the pair began very well- surviving for the lunch break.

Mark Drain joined a focused and determined Devenish but was bowled, in the 45th over, by Kalley's slower ball for just 2 runs off 15 balls.

With an irrefutable under-par score of 117, Chelmsford needed to put the pressure on Wanstead by claiming early and constant wickets whilst keeping the run-rate low.

Wanstead openers Bilal Patel and Tom Simmons started well but their partnership was broken on the last ball of the 10th over when Simmons was given out LBW from Waring's bowling.

Das joined Patel and the pair put on a partnership of 23 before Waring claimed his and Chelmsford's second wicket, on the last ball in the last over before the first drinks break.

In the 31st over Velani reached a quick half century off just 29 balls and Das wrapped up the game by hitting a four; finishing on a good 26 runs from 57 to give Wanstead the win over Chelmsford.

Wanstead will look to push on with their title charge when they play Colchester away on Saturday 3rd July and Chelmsford will want to bounce back with a good result and performance when they host Brentwood at the weekend.

2nd XI vs Oakfield Parkonians (Home) – League.

Oakfield Parkonians 136 all out from 49.
Chelmsford 137/3 from 32.

Chelmsford win by 7 wickets.

On winning the toss Cran stuck Oakfield Parkonians in to bat and unleashed the opening combination of the youthful Rishi and the venerable Fergs.
Obviously bemused by the somewhat varying pace of this pair, OP's 2 and 3 neglected to avoid being bowled by one and then the other.
11-2 after five overs.

First changers Hayto and Liddiard then shared eleven wicketless overs as OP's cautiously advanced to 55-2 and steadied the unsettled start of losing 2 wickets.

Cran summoned Tom Halsey, who promptly trapped the opener Brathwaite (lbw) in his first over and Stuey (6 ov-0m-19r-1w) who induced a catch to Rob Hayto at slip in his second over.

From this point Tom, with his particular brand of slow airy twiddlers, so befuddled OP's that they often seemed to be caught in two or even three minds; evidenced by three stumpings by Cran, two full tosses well caught by Rishi at deep mid-wicket/cow and a catch at deep extra by Chids.

OP's subsided to 136 all out two balls short of 50 overs.

Cran gave Harry Page another opportunity to continue his batting development by opening the reply in partnership with Rob Hayto.

An opening stand of 70 in 20 overs was the result, with Harry's development continuing with another good innings (27 from 63) before being adjudged lbw (by a team-mate!

Chids (42*) and new boy Leo Dolan (19*) knocked off the runs with comparative ease inside 8 overs, to give Chelmsford a comprehensive victory.

Momentum maintained.

Chelmsford still lead the Division by 27 points as Wanstead also had a 20 point win.

So on to next week, crunch week, as Chelmsford travel to Wanstead next week for a top of the table clash.

Losing is not really an option, if it can be avoided and a WIN would be a BIG boost to championship aspirations.

Bring it on!

3rd XI vs Ilford (Away) – League.

Ilford 224 all out from 50 overs.
Chelmsford 116/6 from 45 overs.

Match drawn.
Chelmsford’s 100% record is ended after a trip to Fairlop Oak Playing Fields ends in a draw.
Ilford were put into bat and started strongly with Jeyachandran Jeyarooban and Aarin Korgaonkar seeing off the new ball partnership.

In usual fashion it was pace-off that made the breakthrough is Abdul Baig picked up two in two deliveries first bowling Jeyarooban for 39 and then finding Malik’s edge the very next ball.

Tanay Mukherjee picked up the next wicket to fall as Korgaonkar was caught sharply by Rory Skepelhorn at mid-wicket.

The middle order was ticking things over nicely to the combination of Steve Bond (3-28) and Abdul Baig (4-45) restricted the hosts’ nicely as they were left 120-7 from 40 overs.

Chelmsford’s reply got off to a nightmare start losing two wickets in the first five overs as Ed Cole and Andrew Rycroft were dismissed cheaply.

The star partnership was between Luke Wilson and Matt Cole as they were solid in defence and threw in a couple of well-timed strokes to the boundary.

Runs were certainly hard to come by and with the score at 51-3 at 20 overs the plan became clear to come out with the draw and not throw wickets away.

The game lacked any real excitement towards the last 10-15 overs as no chances were being created down to the resolve of the Chelmsford middle order.
Chelmsford will host Upminster at Chelmer Park in their next fixture.

4th XI vs Loughton (Home) – League.
Loughton 200/9 from 50 overs.
Chelmsford 108/7 from 45 overs.

Match drawn.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Paul Keaney – 46.
- Nigel Guy – 27.
- Anisur Rahman – 12.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Usama Ahmed – 14 overs, 1 maiden, 46 runs and 4 wickets.
- Dan Cornell – 9 overs, 2 maidens, 27 runs and 2 wickets.
- Jack Campion – 9 overs, 0 maidens, 28 runs and 2 wickets.

5th XI vs Leigh On Sea 3rd XI (Home) – League.

Leigh On Sea 194 all out from 45 overs.
Chelmsford 111/5 from 42 overs.

Match drawn.

A personal best performance from Tom Hutchinson was the highlight for Chelmsford of a draw in which they were largely outgunned.

Hutchinson and Beth Wright bowled good opening spells and Hutchinson struck twice but Attwood played with patience and was the one batsman to really find his feet in the game.

The change bowlers were unable to make much impression despite some good overs and a fourth wicket partnership with Attwood put Leigh well on top.

Threadgold ran well to keep the scoreboard moving before an excellent throw from Ben Lawrence ended his innings.

194 was a very challenging score and with Elliott bowling well the reply made a slow start.

Elliott finished his spell with four for 14 but Matt Spinks and Lawrence played with great vigilance, Lawrence responding well to the motivational words of Leigh's first slip that were constantly ringing in everyone's ears.

Match Reports 12th June

Rishabh Upadhyay hits Maiden 2nd XI Half Century to guide them to victory!

1st XI vs Chingford (Away) – League.

Chelmsford 325/6 from 64 overs.
Chingford 203/8 from 65 overs.

Chelmsford draw with Chingford.

Chingford Work Hard for Draw Against In-Form Chelmsford.

On Saturday 12th June, Chingford Cricket Club hosted Chelmsford Cricket Club in a 1st team game which, for the first time this season, started at 11am.

Having already hit 779 runs so far this season, Sterland looked to continue his amazing form with the bat, and he did just that.

Hagen and Sterland looked strong and it wasn't long before Sterland reached his half century.

However, Chingford got their long awaited first wicket in the 29th over when George Duke bowled Hagen out for 51 off 74 balls.

With Sterland comfortably set in the game and not looking like he was going anywhere soon the opener reached his century, his third one so far this season, in the 39th over.

Sterland and Prowting lasted a near twenty over partnership when Sterland was given out LBW from the bowling of Ben MacGregor, for a score of 126 off 155.

Aaron Beard now joined Prowting but he only lasted 9 balls when he was caught by Peter McDermott off the bowling of B.

In the next over Prowting and B.

Prowting departed the field in the 61st over for 60 off 89 balls and with Chelmsford at 305/6.

Brad Green and Jack Cook got Chelmsford up to 320 before three wickets in the last over, including two back-to-back from B.

Chingford's innings started horrifically when they lost opener B.

Gupta joined Chingford star man and Essex League Cricketer Podcast Host Alfie Taylor (great podcast, check it out) and the pair looked to steady the panic from the first over.

Gupta soon followed and edged one behind to keeper Green off Beard's bowling, which meant that Chingford were alarmingly 43/3 off 11 overs.

A.

Maskell was the next to depart for a well needed 42 off 78 after he was caught at short leg by J.
Houldsworth and McDermott were the two now at the crease but in the 39th over, Houldsworth was caught and bowled by J.

Chingford's game plan was to now try and survive, block out and get the draw.

Ben Waring got the last wicket of the game (but not Chingford's) in the 59th over when he got Alexander Shortt out LBW.

2nd XI vs Brentwood (Home) – League.

Brentwood 173/8 from 50 overs.
Chelmsford 176/8 from 45 overs.

Chelmsford win by 2 wickets.

This was one of those games that ebbed and flowed, both sides were at times on top, although Chelmsford probably felt that they were favourites to win most of the time.

Chelmsford lost the toss and so ended up fielding first in warm sunny conditions, very warm even when the sun escaped the clouds.

Drainy struck in his second over, bowling the often-prolific Ben Sach with a peach of a ball.

Two overs later, Lids had the new batsman, the Brentwood skipper, Boon caught by Cran at slip.

Stuey replaced Harry who had had no luck (3-0-18-0), and in his second over Stuey had former Brentwood first XI batsman, Jon Walford (tons of runs at that level - just ask Eddie!

Tom Halsey (6-0-8-2) replaced Lids and struck twice in his second over with the assistance of catches by Lids at midwicket and Catchy behind.

The decision was made to bring back the quicks in a bid to terminate the innings, but this backfired as the ninth wicket pair played them with some ease (and their get out of jail card) in an unbeaten stand of 71 over the remaining 14 overs to take the Brentwood innings to 173-8 off the 50 overs.

For Brentwood, Nazir Khan finished on 47* and PJ Jacques on 26*.

The Chelmsford seamers had their earlier figures tarnished somewhat with Drainy finishing with (12-4-40-1), Andy Styan (9-1-24-0) and Lids (10-3-57-3).

With the asking rate under 4 an over, the Chelmsford reply did not start well, 12-2 after 3 overs, with both openers gone to injudicious shots, Harry caught at short backward square for 4, and Catchy, caught behind off one that took off.

Dutchy (22) and Chids (26) played sensibly, adding 49 in 14 overs, before departing in quick succession, Dutchy bowled, and Chids by the fickle finger of LBW.

Rishi and Cran then combined in the key partnership of the innings, 59 off 11 overs before Cran (21) succumbed to the fickle finger again.

However, he was bowled on 56 (8x4 65 balls), and Stuey (0) quickly followed, also bowled.

160-8, with 14 required from 7 overs.

Brentwood sensed an opportunity, but with Lids, especially watchful, dots and singles, rather than trademark triple 4 heroics, whilst Andy clobbered a precious boundary, the score was advanced to 171-8 with one over remaining.

Momentum maintained (just), and significantly so, as Chingford improbably held out to deny main rivals Wanstead.

Next week, the 2's are away to the afore-mentioned bottom of the table Chingford, and must look to go one better than Wanstead by getting a win to consolidate their top of the table position.

3rd XI vs Oakfield Parkonians (Away) – League.

Oaklfield Parkonians 167 all out from 44.
Chelmsford 168/4 from 31.

Chelmsford win by 6 wickets.

Chelmsford maintains their 100% record in the league to extend a gap at the top of the table.

Early runs were stemmed by the attritional bowling partnership of Neil Fergus (0-18) and Shona Keaney (0-40).

The spin pair of Hayto (4-38) and Abdul Baig (5-15) dominated the middle portion of the host’s innings taking wickets at regular intervals.

Anis Rehman also picking the only wicket to come from a seamer with his first ball of the afternoon.

Ed Cole was dismissed early by Matthew Holland which was met by wild scenes from the Parkonians XI.

Hugo Skepelhorn (68*) at the over end also did not take long to go about his work.

The pair batted beautifully together making it tough work for the bowling attack as they both passed fifty and a 100 hundred partnership in quick succession.

Chelmsford will host Belhus at Chelmer Park in the seventh round of matches

4th XI vs Hornchurch (Home) – League.
Hornchurch 204 all out from 50 overs.
Chelmsford 206/7 from 43.

Chelmsford win by 3 wickets.

The fourth team continued their season with a home game this week vs Hornchurch 4’s in the first of the timed games.

Tanay Mukherjee (1/15) similarly made a breakthrough in his first over leaving Hornchurch 4 down without much on the board.

Chelmsford’s response looked steady with openers Jordan Campion and Paul Keaney battling away a good opening spell, punishing the bad balls and picking up a 42-run opening stand.

Two more quick wickets left Chelmsford in a tricky position.

5th XI vs Hadleigh & Thundersly 3rd XI (Home) – League.

Hadleigh 211/7 off 45 overs.
Chelmsford 122 all out from 33.

Hadleigh win by 89 runs.

Hadleigh & Thundersly batting figures:
- Ian Harrison – 50.
- Ben Read – 28*.
- Justus Genthe – 26*.
- Joshua Faires – 24.

Chelmsford bowling figures:
- Beth Wright – 10 overs, 3 maidens, 34 runs, 3 wickets.
- Tom Hutchinson – 7 overs, 2 maidens, 31 runs, 2 wickets.
- Brian Kaludewa – 10 overs, 1 maiden, 44 runs, 1 wicket.
- Ben Lawrence – 12 overs, 1 maiden, 52 runs, 1 wicket.

Chelmsford batting figures:
- Brian Kaludewa – 39*.
- Tom Hutchinson – 24.
- Nigel Guy – 11.
- Matt Spinks – 10.

Hadleigh & Thundersly bowling figures:
- Ben Mascall – 9 overs, 2 maidens, 24 runs, 3 wickets.
- Justus Genthe – 6 overs, 2 maidens, 11 runs, 3 wickets.
- Alastair Graham – 8.
- Joshua Faires – 4 overs, 0 maidens, 14 runs, 2 wickets.

A week of close games!

1st XI vs Brentwood (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 134 all out from 43.
Brentwood 109 all out from 45 overs.

Chelmsford win by 25 runs.

On Saturday 3rd July Brentwood Cricket Club took a short trip down the A12 for the derby clash at Chelmer Park versus Chelmsford Cricket Club.

Luckily the delay lasted only twenty minutes, so play was able to start at 11:20 with nine overs taken away due to bad weather.

Throughout the morning there were patches of consistent rain which enabled the umpires to take the players off and cries for the covers to be swiftly brought on were heard.

Chelmsford openers Jack Sterland and Dan Hagen looked to begin their innings as sturdy as they had done all season, when the pair reached 24 without loss after the first 7 overs.

Ben Waring joined his captain, Sterland, at the crease but the pair only lasted five and a half overs as Waring was caught by Aaron West off Charlie Griffiths' bowling in the 14th over.

To Chelmsford's despair, Sterland was bowled by Griffiths two overs after Waring's departure for a steady score of 28 from 46 balls and Brentwood nailed the hosts to 53/3 after 16 overs.

J.

Ben Clifford joined Catchpole and looked in good shape after hitting two fours in his first four balls, but in the 28th over he was caught by Harry Phillips off the bowling of Griffiths.

Brad Green joined Catchpole and the pair lasted four overs before Griffiths claimed yet another wicket, his fourth; this time caught and bowled.

In the over that followed Griffiths' wicket-maiden, C.

Oliver Devenish and Liam Keaney were once again (like many times this season) tasked with manoeuvring Chelmsford out of trouble by digging in and scoring vital tail-end runs and to a certain extent- they did.

Ballard, alongside Essex's promising young opening batsman Will Buttleman, needed to get their side off to a strong start to put the pressure on Chelmsford's bowling attack.

C.

Two overs later, a fired-up Devenish struck again, twice!

The relentless wicket taking from the home side didn't stop there.

Aaron West was the next batsman to depart after he nicked one behind to keeper B.
Phillips joined Moore but the pair only managed a 4-run partnership before B.

Moore and Griffiths steadied the rapid flow of wickets when the pair put on a remarkable 32 run-partnership from 67 balls.

2nd XI vs Wanstead & Snaresbrook (Away) – League.

Wanstead & Snaresbrook 148/9 from 36 overs.
Chelmsford 151/7 dec from 40 overs.

Match drawn.
An absolute corker of a match, between first and second in the league, with both sides competing fiercely from start to finish, which could have gone either way up to the final ball, which saw Wanstead needing 5 runs and Chelmsford 1 wicket but ended in a thrilling draw.
After Wanstead run the toss and put Chelmsford in, only 4 overs were possible before steady persistent drizzle forced the teams off with Chelmsford on 7-0.

Rob Hayto (4) nicked behind at the end of first over after the restart, and Dutchy joined Drainy in the middle.
Harry attempted to but was immediately brilliantly caught on the long-off boundary.
151-7 off the 40.
Drainy (9-2-28-1), seemingly always up for unleashing hell, responded by bustling in with menace and removing the Wanstead opener, lbw in the first over.
Two overs later Lids ran out the No.
Wanstead skipper, Jack Lord, and brother Adam, had other ideas, however, proceeding at a run a ball.

Cran rang the changes again, bringing on Lids and Fergs (that's 8 bowlers used so far, Wanstead's opening pace pair had shared 30 overs, with their two change bowlers sharing the other 10!
Cran, you are genius!
Unfortunately, Lids' next over goes for 12.
Cran plays the joker, in the form of the previously carted Tom, who now bowls a maiden to Velani.
Cran brings back Drainy, who only goes for 3.
Wonder of wonders, Tom, in an act of pure self-preservation, does what Lids could not do earlier (because he was holding a bat), and somehow catches a fiercely struck chest high straight drive from Adam Lord (42) and, and, only concedes 1 run in the over.
Drainy follows up by only conceding 4 from the penultimate over.
Tom to bowl the last over.
A Single, 10 from 5 balls.
4 out near long on 6 from 4 balls.
Dot ball.

WICKET!
Single from Velani (18*) - have Wanstead settled for the draw?
Final ball, the last man pushes a single.
MATCH DRAWN - Wanstead 4 runs short, Chelmsford 1 wicket short.
Oh, and I seem to omit to mention that the wounded person dropped Mahesh Velani (18*) on the long on boundary somewhere in Tom's last two overs.
Cran and his men are buzzing, but a little disappointed that they could not quite finish the job which would have meant a 25-6 points win which would have opened up a significant 46-point lead over Wanstead.
Halfway stage of the season P9 W7 D1 A1(Ilford away!
Job half done, but momentum still maintained, just.
Good team performances all through, but none better than today, with everyone contributing something.
And thanks to our travelling support.
Next week, the 2's are home at Chelmer, facing an improving 4th placed Buckhurst Hill.

3rd XI vs Upminster (Home) – League.

Chelmsford 164 all out from 46.
Upminster 165/6 from 55.

Upminster win by 4 wickets.

Chelmsford Batting figures:
- Harry Page – 66.
- Adam Derham – 25.
- Luke Wilson – 17.

Chelmsford Bowling figures:
- Adam Derham – 16 overs, 3 maidens, 32 runs, 5 wickets.
- Matt Cole – 9 overs, 3 maidens, 33 runs, 1 wicket.

4th XI vs Wickford (Away) – League.
Wickford 199/9 from 43.
Chelmsford 198/4 from 50 overs.

Wickford win by 1 wicket.

Chelmsford Batting:
- Phil Arnold – 74*.
- Nigel Guy – 40.
- Jordan Campion – 36.

Chelmsford Bowling:
- Dan Purchase – 8 overs, 1 maiden, 28 runs, 3 wickets.
- Usama Ahmed – 13 overs, 1 maiden, 62 runs and 3 wickets.
- Henry Pearce – 8 overs, 1 maiden, 46 runs and 3 wickets.

5th XI vs Belhus 4th XI (Away) – League.

Belhus 166/9 from 45 overs.
Chelmsford 153/7 from 40 overs.

Match drawn.

Another draw for Chelmsford but this was a game that might have been won.

Brian Kaludewa (1-22) bowled well and made an early incision but Thompson (31) played well before being dismissed at 50 by Anish Nikam (2-33) .

They both fell in the same over to Aditya Kuzhupilly (2-24) with the dangerous Marlow (28) very well caught by Nikam.

The last wicket pair managed a crucial 20 runs from the final 20 balls to close the innings at 166 for nine from 45 overs.

After losing an early wicket in the chase, the second wicket pair started to look purposeful before falling in short order including a needless but well executed run out.

Beth Wright had begun to find her feet after a slow start and Lawrence also took his time to get in.

For once, this was a game in which the result would have been different if the opposition's catching had matched Chelmsford's.

Man of the Match: Ben Lawrence
